One of the surviving X-15 rocket-powered aircraft that made unprecedented high-speed and high-altitude flights during the 1960s. I took this picture on my first visit to the National Air & Space Museum (NASM) in Washington, D.C. during a class trip in June 1979.

As with the Bell X-1, I have taken better pictures of the X-15 on subsequent visits to this museum, but this picture recalls the wonder of seeing these aircraft for the first time.

You can read more about the X-15 here:

I took this picture using the second 35mm camera I ever had, a Leica IIIf with a 50mm f2 Summitar lens.

N703NA, the second of two experimental XV-15 tilt-rotor aircraft built by Bell for NASA, photographed at NAS Moffett Field in May 1982.

This aircraft was used in research that supported the development of the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. It is now in the collection of the National Air & Space Museum at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

Update: Here's a photo of N703NA at the National Air and Space Museum::

NASA DC-8 Airborne Science Laboratory N717NA, now N817NA. Photographed in December 1997 at NASA Ames Research Center, Mountain View, California. As of 2014 this aircraft is based at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.

This aircraft, c/n 46082, was built as a DC-8-62H and originally delivered to Alitalia in 1969. It became a DC-8-72 when its original low-bypass engines were replaced with CFM56-2C high-bypass turbofans.

This aircraft provides NASA with a versatile platform in which researchers can install sensors for a wide variety of earth science missions.
