The Shot

This is the canopy over the entrance area to the EDF building in the Paris business district of La Defence. It looks just like the undersides of the Saucer Section of the Enterprise. Whoever was the architect of the building was being very kind to Photographers or Sci Fi fans or both. I took a shot of this in April in daylight and this night shot was taken on my visit in July. Despite the city lights the stars are just visible in the picture.

The picture was taken with a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. The longest of the 3 exposures was 30 seconds. 3 raw images 2EV spacing for HDR. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

The HDR was created using Photomatix and additional enhancements in Topaz adjust and adjustment layers in Photoshop.

The Shot

When I went to Paris in July I had another chance to Photograph the Rainbow Tower in the La Defense District. It is also a great subject to play around with the Photoshop Transform Warp Effect.

Among the skyscrapers there are a number of sculptures including this one. It is a fair bit smaller than the skyscrapers but still a good size, at a guess 40-50 ft tall. It can be found near the Esplanade de Defence Metro Station. The image was taken from right next to the tower.

The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. No HDR for this one.

After enhancement in Topaz and Photoshop I used the Edit -Transform – Warp command to spread out and curve the base.

The Shot

This picture was taken close to home at the Goodwood Motor Race Circuit near Chichester, West Sussex, UK. The circuit is used for Cycle Races on Tuesday evenings in the Summer.

This image is a scan of a slide taken in 1996. All the movement in the picture was done in camera with zooming and panning during the exposure

No HDR for a change but there were some enhancements, see below..

The camera used was a Minolta Dynax 700si. The scanner was a Nikon Coolscan 5 slide scanner.

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance.

A copy of the picture in which the exposure was increased in Raw was copied as a new layer with a layer mask to selectively increase brightness in the sky which in the scanning came out too dark. Note to edit the Tiff file obtained from the scan in Raw in Photoshop go to file and then “open as” navigate to the required image but before opening use the dropdown to change the file type to” Camera Raw”

A brightness/contrast adjustment layer was used with a layer mask to increase Brightness on the main rider to make him stand out.

Vibrance layer increase by 51 points

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening low radius and higher amount.

Duplicate layer with mask to apply extra sharpening and contrast with low amount and high radius (Clarity Effect) to the main rider

The Shot

This image just sneaked into Explore a few days after upload at number 500.

This shot was taken at La Defense the modern Paris Business District. The Grande Arche is at the far end of an Avenue which goes miles back to the Arc de Triomphe but makes that look a tiddler by comparison.

The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing for HDR. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

The HDR was created using Photomatix and additional enhancements in Topaz adjust and adjustment layers in Photoshop.

It has more of an HDR look to it than most of my pictures but I thought it suited this subject well.

Full details of the processing together with before and after images and a Tip of the day on HDR or processing are on my Blog see Edwin Jones Photography Blog

The Shot

This picture was taken close to home at the Goodwood Motor Race Circuit near Chichester, West Sussex, UK. The circuit is used for Cycle Races on Tuesday evenings in the Summer. This was taken during my second visit this year to the racing at the circuit.

No HDR for a change but this is far from a straight image, see below.

The camera used was a Sony A550 with a Sigma 28-200 Zoom at 200mm. The image was opened in Camera Raw and saved as a Tiff.

Photoshop

The original picture was cropped fo focus in close on the riders.

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude highlights.

The Zoom Blur effect focused on the one rider is done in Photoshop with a radial blur zoom. This method is described in detail here
