On Saturday 15th October I took a Photographic day trip to London, about 1 hour 40 minutes from home by train.

This is Clapham North, one of few underground stations in London where trains travelling in opposite directions can be caught from the same platform which makes for a great photo with a wide angle lens. I think the only other Station like this is Clapham North also on the Northern Line. The trains on this line also have some great bright colours.

It is normally quite difficult to catch 2 trains moving at the same time. I struck lucky as I got this shot about 5 minutes after getting there. I stayed there for another 40 minutes taking pictures but didn’t get it again.

I think that permits are required for professional photography but casual photographs are allowed but no tripods and no flash.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld at 1000 ISO and at 1/6 of a second. There was a handy bench to sit on in the middle of the platform which helps to keep steady.

I originally took this as 3 images for HDR but this didn’t come out too well with too much difference from the train movement so I decided to go for just one exposure. I choose the +2 EV image which had more movement in the trains and adjusted exposure in Raw and used recovery, clarity and vibrance adjustments

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude the highlight areas

Vibrance layer was decreased by 10 points.

Hue Saturation adjustment layer yellows increased and mask used to apply it only to the yellow lines and ceiling.

Second saturation adjustment layer used to increase blue saturation, slightly reduce the reds and slightly reduce overall with the master.

Original image 0V copied in as new layer with layer mask and used replace the people as that copy had a faster shutter speed and less movement.

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening.

Duplicate layer with mask to apply extra sharpening with low amount and high radius to the platform, ceiling and small parts of the trains for extra contrast

Reached EXPLORE 392 for 17th October 2011

The Shot

This picture was taken close to home at the Goodwood Motor Race Circuit near Chichester, West Sussex, UK. The circuit is used for Cycle Races on Tuesday evenings in the Summer. This was taken during my second visit this year to the racing at the circuit.

No HDR for a change but this is far from a straight image, see below.

The camera used was a Sony A550 with a Sigma 28-200 Zoom at 200mm. The image was opened in Camera Raw and saved as a Tiff.

Photoshop

The original picture was cropped fo focus in close on the riders.

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude highlights.

The Zoom Blur effect focused on the one rider is done in Photoshop with a radial blur zoom. This method is described in detail here

The Shot

I took this while exploring London last weekend.
The picture was taken on a corner of Canada Square in the Canary Wharf financial District

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used.

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude the highlight areas.

Vibrance layer increase 19 points

Saturation layer blues to reduce the intensity of the blue in the sky and buildings.

An adjustment layer, photo filters, magenta was used to further tone down the blues.

A second Saturation layer yellows was used with an increase of 59 points to sharply increase the faint touches of yellows in the picture to provide contrast with the strong blue look.

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening.

Duplicate layer with mask to apply extra sharpening and contrast to the buildings with low amount and high radius using Unsharp mask. I used 76 amount, 76 radius and Zero threshold. It varies with the picture but that generally works quite well. It has to be applied with a mask and brush to avoid blowing out highlight areas. Note that the normal overall sharpening again varies but a starting point is amount 300, radius 1.1 and threshold zero.

The Shot

This view was taken from the South Bank of the Thames. The area is part of the London Riverside More London Development. The building in the foreground is the Offices of a Charity, Teach First. In the background is City Hall and behind that is Tower Bridge.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken on a tripod. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used. With this shot even more than usual the greatest degree of improvement in the image was in the subsequent adjustments in Photoshop.

Photoshop

The objectives of the processing here were to first to reduce a green cast. This was visible in the original and increased with contrast adjustments such as levels. It is caused when the Cameras White Balance is not able to cope with many different light sources in night photography and gets it a bit wrong. The processing was also to substantially enhance the colours in the building. These were present in the lights in the original images but only to a small degree. This was in addition to the usual contrast and sharpness increases applied selectively

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance. Layer masks used to exclude highlight areas

Vibrance layer reduced 12 points

Saturation adjustment layer greens decrease 85 points and hue 12 points towards the blue end to remove green cast.

Second saturation layer master applied with a layer mask and a brush at differing opacities to increase saturation in the buildings and trees.

Photo Filter layer mask magenta used to cut out green cast further

Photo Filter layer mask yellows used to increase warmth in some of the lighting

Original image 0V copied in as new layer with layer mask and used to change the over blue colour of City Hall.

Original image -2EV copied in as new layer with layer mask and used to darken the sky

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening low radius and higher amount.

Duplicate layer with mask to apply extra sharpening and contrast with low amount and high radius to everywhere except highlights and the sky.

The Shot

This picture was taken close to home at the Goodwood Motor Race Circuit near Chichester, West Sussex, UK. The circuit is used for Cycle Races on Tuesday evenings in the Summer.

This image is a scan of a slide taken in 1996. All the movement in the picture was done in camera with zooming and panning during the exposure

No HDR for a change but there were some enhancements, see below..

The camera used was a Minolta Dynax 700si. The scanner was a Nikon Coolscan 5 slide scanner.

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance.

A copy of the picture in which the exposure was increased in Raw was copied as a new layer with a layer mask to selectively increase brightness in the sky which in the scanning came out too dark. Note to edit the Tiff file obtained from the scan in Raw in Photoshop go to file and then “open as” navigate to the required image but before opening use the dropdown to change the file type to” Camera Raw”

A brightness/contrast adjustment layer was used with a layer mask to increase Brightness on the main rider to make him stand out.

Vibrance layer increase by 51 points

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening low radius and higher amount.

Duplicate layer with mask to apply extra sharpening and contrast with low amount and high radius (Clarity Effect) to the main rider
