The Manawatu River's estuary is a 90 minute drive north; usually, there is an excellent cross-section of birds: Godwits and Red Knots that haven't migrated to Alaska. Terns, Herons, Mallards, Gulls - Red-Billed and Black-Backed - and the comparatively rare white Little Egret...!
But...
Last Sunday (The 11th), I headed for the Manawatu Estuary. I was late leaving (our church service doesn't finish until around 11.15am and there were people who wanted to chat, but at around Midday, I set off...
So it was with a degree of excitement that I turned into the road that led to the estuary; what would I find...???
Answer: two Mallards - and that was it...!!! And worse: the tide was so far out that it was almost impossible to see any water...!!!
After taking a photo of the Mallards (Well, they were better than nothing!!!), I was just about to drive to the nearby ocean beach when a loud cry signalled the arrival of a White-Faced Heron who was patiently plodding up a shallow strand of water, searching for food... It wasn't the Little Egret, but hey: beggars can't be choosers - and after all: there wasn't much else to photograph...!!!
And if you're still reading, well: thanks; you've done very well...!!!
Thanks so much for the very kind and encouraging comments beneath this photo...! Your support is always greatly appreciated...!
This White-Faced Heron could be asking a question made famous in "Snow White".
