This ERF is a little before my time so I may have got the model designation wrong (clarification or correction welcome). In any event, it is a very elegant vehicle with a bespoke body for Ushers Brewery of Trowbridge in Wiltshire. Established in 1824, Ushers had a long and complicated history up to closure in 2000. Once again, I am indebted to Graham Newell for the original monochrome image from his extensive collection of manufacturers photos. In this case, my copyright assertion applies to the colour overlay only (01-May-20).

You are welcome to link to this image but it would be a criminal offence to post a copy of the image itself to Facebook or anywhere else. Additional information about my Flickr collection and the techniques used can be found here:

Corgi offered a less extensive range of commercial vehicles than rival Dinky Toys. The initial range, as far as I can determine, comprised Commer QX, ERF KV and Bedford S-Type cabs with a variety of body styles, plus the Bedford CA in van and Utilicon form. All were attractive and accurate models with the added advantage of glazing at a time when Corgi was promoting its products as ‘the Ones with Windows’. This is an approximate real-life representation of No 456, which utilised the ERF KV cab. The dropside body isn’t quite right (being of steel rather than timber construction) but the colours have been matched to the model. The same chassis/cab also appeared with flatbed, box van, cement truck and tipper bodies; and also as a gift set with a drawbar trailer (22-Oct-22).

Introduced in 1954, ERF’s futuristic LV (Kleer Vue) cab incorporated one of the very first applications of curved glass in a commercial vehicle and one that reputedly caused manufacturer Triplex many challenges. It became hugely popular; so much so that the letters KV were commonly used to describe the model range as a whole. This dropside truck carries the attractive livery of the Heavy Transport Company, the road haulage subsidiary of the Englash China Clay Company (14-Jan-23).

I’ve been unable to source any information about McClenaghan Transport of Slamannan in Lanarkshire, but did notice a couple of its trucks at Truckfest Scotland 2021. This fictional ERF KV is presented in the livery of the company’s preserved ERF LV. One of the most distinctive cabs of its era, the fibreglass KV ‘Kleer View’ was offered from 1954 until replaced by the LV in 1962, which later metamorphosed into the A-Series (22-Apr-23).

This image is loosely based on an ERF KV (with a different style of dropside body) parked-up in the Lija premises of Blokrete in the early 2000s, its working life seemingly at an end. The only other KV that I was aware of at that date was a similarly derelict example in the yard of George Pace at Paola. Both carried untypically plain liveries for Maltese trucks, plain grey in the former case and plain green in the latter. Either or both could still exist, such is the squirrelling away of old vehicles in lock-ups and on small holdings across the island (15-Sep-23).
