A quick internet search has not revealed any Foden S80s in the Stobart fleet but, in a fleet that has seized the imagination of many, anything is possible. This preserved S80 (GTS 67N) was one of several participating in the 2010 Tyne-Tees run. It is good to see so many of these 'modern day' (depending on when you were born) classics out and about (23-Apr-14).

International Harvester's first foray in the UK truck market was not a great success and it was only with the later acquisition of Seddon-Atkinson that it gained a significant presence, but that is another story. The American-designed Loadstar range was assembled at Doncaster in a plant acquired from the Ford Motor Company in 1963. Offered predominately in conventional (bonneted or normal control) form, the Loadstar was very much a typical American truck, which failed to attract UK buyers in worthwhile numbers. Some may have been exported to Australia or New Zealand. This fictional example carries the livery of National Carriers Limited, which was the successor to British Railways road collection and delivery service (07-Nov-15).

A variation of this image has already appeared with the actual markings carried by the real-life vehicle. This version is closer to the Dinky Toys version which, in recent years, has appeared in the Atlas Editions ‘reproduction’ model range. In original form, it was a very substantial model with a diecast chassis/cab and tinplate tank (I believe the reproduction had a plastic tank) and remained in the Dinky SuperToys range from 1958 to 1964. Thanks again to Graham Newell for the base image (29-Jan-22).

Percival Charles Howard of Kings Cliffe in Northamptonshire entered the road haulage business in 1939 when his farmland was requisitioned by the Air Ministry. After briefly expanding into local bus operations in the 1950s, the company re-focussed on road haulage, securing major contracts with the London Brick Company and British Steel in the 1960s. The business continued in family ownership after Percy’s death in 1968 and currently runs around 100 heavy good vehicles in a distinctive dark blue (almost black), red and white livery. Its heritage fleet includes several ERFs and other types associated with the company’s heritage (20-Mar-21).

I recall seeing a model of a similar vehicle but I've no knowledge of an actual Foden FG operated by Barton. Nevertheless it looks well with Barton's distinctive cream hubs. This fictional image is a digital conversion from a three-axle original, done in such a way that the additional axle (and the sheeted load) can be hidden if required (03-Oct-15).
