This view looks north on S. Washington St. through what was once this small village's business district. The white wood-frame building ahead on the left once served as the Village Hall. The field on our immediate left held a brick jailhouse that served Berlin and other nearby communities as needed. Also gone from this view are several commercial buildings, including a general store.

Berlin is a village in Sangamon County, and is located about 14 miles W. of Springfield. The population was 140 at the 2000 census. Known until the 1950s as "Old Berlin", the community is 2.5 miles north of New Berlin.

Electrical power to the old Village Hall has been cutoff, and the future of this building appears uncertain. The structure was originally built in the park seen on the right. As a matter of fact, Village Hall stood between those two large trees in the distance. Back in the 1940s, the Village Hall was relocated to its present location. A local told me he was a boy of the day of the move. He vividly recalled how six teams of horses pulled the wooden building to its new resting spot.

This is the former home of the Berlin Christian Church. A new church building now sits on the east edge of the village, and this old church is now a day care center.
