When I was a kid, this eastern towhee was called the rufous-sided towhee, and this guy is showing us why.

Strong southerly breezes blew in a nice big wave of yellow-rumped warblers today. This handsome male was traveling with about 30 of his friends as they picked midges off the tree branches near Bohemian Creek.

The last time I was in Vermont, when there was snow, I thought of photographing this tree. Unfortunately, the side that looked best, plastered with fresh, white snow stuck, was the less interesting side. A few days ago, I was in Vermont only for a few hours and as I was about to pass without stopping, someone started walking up the hill.

Built circa 1814, possibly using slave labor, this Federal and Greek Revival-style house was constructed for Thomas Pindell, then-mayor of Lexington, who later sold it to General Thomas Bodley, a veteran of the War of 1812. The house served as a military headquarters during the Civil War, both by Union and Confederate forces, and was purchased by the Bullock family in 1912, and was lived in by members of the family until 1970. The house features a front-gable roof, a red flemish bond brick exterior, six-over-six double-hung windows, wooden shutters, Palladian attic windows on the gable ends, a front portico with fluted doric columns and doric pilasters, a two-story side portico with doric columns, and a rough-hewn stone base. The house is a contributing structure in the Gratz Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
