This common resident of reedy marshes and cattail swamps is very vocal and spends most of its time foraging for insects deep in the dense vegetation of its habitat.
If one is very patient an aggressive male may perch atop a reed or cattail and chastise you giving you a photo opportunity like this one has. His mate is on the nest down in the vegetation and he is working diligently harvesting insects to feed her. He paused momentarily to tell me I am infringing on his territory.

A warbling songbird appreciated by many who get to listen to their long, melodious phrases they seemingly sing non-stop in the spring.

Being a species so tolerant of humans many of us are very familiar with this colourful songbird. Its favored habitat is forest edges where it perches high in a tall hardwood tree and the males become very vocal in the spring attempting to get attention from the females.
They tend to forage alone in the denser foliage of trees where they hop and flit throughout the leaves foraging on various insects including spiders and their favored caterpillars. They will also dine on fruit and sip nectar.
The Dutch Elm disease decimated their favored tree for nesting so they have adapted to using other species including sycamore and cottonwood where a mated pair will raise 4 or 5 young per season.

This member of the "Rail" family resembles a duck with a bill like a chicken and acts like a rail. Previously this species was called a Common Moorhen and is closely related to the moorhen species of the Old World.
Its favored habitat is ponds and marshes with ample thick cover that they can dart in and out of while feeding and vocalizing with its clucking and squawking. When not swimming along side thick vegetation it will be walking on floating green matter or on soft mud.
