From the Honolulu Museum of Art description:

"This classic example of a kappa have Hawai'i (Hawaiian flag quilt) features a variation on the royal coat of arms at its center surrounded by four Hawaiian flags. The Hawaiian flag includes the British Union Jack representing the positive relationship Hawai'i had with England, and after 1845 included, from the top, eight stripes arranged in a repeating sequence of white, red and blue. The flag stripes represent the eight main islands of the Hawaiian chain, but quilters frequently modify the number and order of stripes to create patterns that accommodate elaborate focal points at the center of the quilt. The center image in this quilt is based on the revised coat of arms designed for the coronation of King Kalakaua in 1883 where the 'ahu'ula (feather cape) was replaced with an ermine cape as an internationally recognized symbol of royal government."
