People of Norway always dream about the summer. They have boats and the lucky ones houses by the sea. The preparation of the boats start as soon as the snow melts and most of these ocean lovers take their vacation in July which statistically is the month with best chances of hitting the summer weather.

But, when you live in Norway you know the summer is going to be short. But, you also know that when the summer arrives there is no other place on earth you would like to be. The temperature is perfect and the days are long and the nights short. The challenging part of experiencing the summer here in the north is to be there at the right time because you never know when it will arrive. So, the locals always win because they live here and can enjoy the summer when it decides to arrive. I am often filled with some sort of sadness in the mids of these warm periods because I know they won't last for very long (usually). Mother nature typically only graces us with a few weeks of really warm summer weather here.

This photo is taken on our first boat trip of the season. As you can see it was already late July but we all knew it; the weather forecast was without doubt: the warm summer weather had arrived. On this evening we visited my favorite island in the archipelago. I have taken many photos here some of which you can see in my archipelago set. This view is facing north and just a few minutes apart I captured the photos below facing south (which is also why you see some flares resulting from the wave splashes - I have removed some of them in the redbubble version for fine prints).

The hike up to Reinebringen in Lofoten goes straight from the sea level and ends 448m higher up. It is quite steep and there are ropes to help you pass the steepest passages on your way up. The peak offers a breathtakingly beautiful view as you try not to look too far down on the other almost vertical side of the mountain.

This is my 4th remake of this view. Ever since I found it many years ago I have been to this location as often as I could. It takes some time to get there but for me it is heaven on earth. By a fast boat you need around 20-30 minutes to reach the island from the closest town. You will find many of my seascapes captured here.

I can not accurately describe in words what attracts me to this view but I feel a tremendous pull into this scene. It visually sucks me in and fascinates me.

I visited the island this time on a rainy day for the first time. The rocks are very slippery due to the rain (check the raindrops in the water). I could barely stand stand still where I was and the tripod had almost no support. Luckily there was no wind though and the image turned out reasonably sharp.

If you compare this with the other takes you will find some very noticeable differences in light, technique and color. This 4th take is much more moody due to the pale sky and the black and wet rock. There are almost no colors in the scene with a nice exception of the green seaweed in the front water and the orange lichen on the rocks.

I had not visited the location for about 2 years and I was full of anticipation getting back. In spite of (or perhaps because of) the bad weather I was thrilled to walk the old paths again. Does this 4th take bring anything new? Maybe. Maybe not. It does not really matter to me. I just had to do it and I wanted to share it with you - again.

So I am still on my dreamy seascape trip here and hope you bear with me with more long exposures and this time also vivid colors.

When I saw this rock I immediately envisaged it to be in the middle of a classic 6x4 crop. Combining this centered rock with the horizon positioned in the upper third looked like a good choice. As for the colors I have chosen to keep them naturally saturated and dark.

This work (and the title) is a humble homage to Rhein II by Andreas Gursky. There is a twist however, I did not manipulate out buildings, people and animals.

Some 30 minutes later I visited this remote island and the historical site of the sad ending of Salomon August Andrée's
Arctic Balloon Expedition of 1897.

That was a bit further to the right of this view...

I present you this in 4K! Try hitting the keys "F11" and "L" to fill your monitor. Maybe you will also spot the wild life...
