We were lucky enough to be at Yellowstone the first week that the Mountain Bluebirds returned on their migration. It was the first bird we saw, followed by a Cassin's Finch. In 9 days, I had 11 new species ... not that I'm counting.

Though these are found at the 2,000 foot level of Mt. Diablo, I've seen only one in 25 years, and it has been for lack of looking. What better way to get a shot than to drive 1,000 miles to Yellowstone, and have one greet me on the first morning we were there!

One of the toughest birds I've ever photographed is the Common Raven. The nuances in black are difficult at best. This day, the raven was sitting almost at eye level on an exposed branch of a pine. At 6,000 feet, the wind was more than a gentle breeze, but it just ruffled his feathers, and this shot was the result of me being patient.
