Having a little fun tracking this sailboat crossing San Francisco Bay while the heavy smog pretty much spoiled my cityscape photography on that October day.

You can see the photo of this same boat passing the Golden Gate Bridge 4 minutes earlier ~~here~~. 😊

"Haze is traditionally an atmospheric phenomenon in which dust, smoke, and other dry particles suspended in air obscure visibility and the clarity of the sky.

Haze over the San Francisco Bay can also be a precursor to smog, which is caused by nitrogen oxides and other volatile organic compounds in the air.

When it's cooler, these compounds appear grayish, but as the day heats up, they can turn yellow or brown through a chemical reaction.

The haze is more visible over the bay because it mixes with moisture."

For the first time in over a decade, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks moved to the west side of Manhattan, launching from 5 barges along the Hudson River. (For the past 9 years, the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks launched out of the East River.) The display featured more than 60,000 shells that reached more than 1,000 feet into the sky, the largest number yet for what's dubbed the largest such display in the country.

Unfortunately, we were in the downwind position , about 1/3 of the firework display was shrouded in thick smoke.

I'm glad we were about 5 miles away, for Nitrogen and sulfur, used to create color and special effects, can combine with oxygen to form nitric and sulfuric acids which are very hard on the lungs. Definitely do not envy those who watching the show from the nearby cruiseships and boats! 😊

"There was a huge show of patriotism on the Hudson River Thursday night for the nation's largest fireworks show.

The 48th edition of the Macy's 4th of July fireworks in New York City returned to the Hudson River for the first time since 2013, and it didn't disappoint.

A choreographed dance of drones was the opening act, painting the sky with the colors and shapes of celebration.

Then, 60,000 shells of popping pyrotechnics went to work, bursting over the Hudson, delighting an audience brimming with pride."

As seen from Muley Point East, Utah...
