They are a pair of Yukon River dogs from the village of Galena. Victims of spring flooding brought to Fairbanks with many other dogs and then eventually left at our local shelter. I think they are siblings but I’m not quite sure. I don’t even know their names, although they were named Sugar (the female, left) and Stix (male, right) by shelter staff. They don’t respond to those names at all.

They are quite wild, untrained, timid around people, but comfortable (more or less) around the other dogs. For right now I'm trying to give them some stability. I brought them home yesterday afternoon.

It's very interesting to bring dogs like this into the established family, they are such curious animals. So far it's going pretty good, although Stix began howling mournfully at about 4 am; that sort of thing is to be expected. They are both very beautiful and look pretty healthy. Both were "fixed" one week ago. I have a feeling they are going to be really good sled dogs, and they look very much like my Alaskans, in fact the female, Sugar, looks quite a bit like Wrinkle who died recently, and her father Biscuit, who was also a Yukon River dog. They are real Alaskan Huskies.

I didn’t think I’d be here, but here I am, and here they are, for the moment foster dogs. We’ll see how that works.

Currently I am fostering them through the Second Chance League Sled Dog Rescue. If you’re curious you can see the original post with pictures and description of them here: www.carolkleckner.net/category/dogs/

adj.
1. of the nature of or made or done as a trial, experiment, or attempt: a tentative agreement.
2. unsure; not definite or positive; hesitant: a tentative smile.

Shusana and Alder on the occasion of our first sled run of the new season. Here before our run and quite possibly their first ever ride in a dog truck. While they seem tentative about to exit their boxes, once on the line and on the trail they were anything but.

I see only positive things for them.

Taken after their third run with the team. They are both excellent, quite different in their ways, both beginning to find their place in the team. I'm very pleased with them.

Alder and his sister Shusana have been with us for eight months now. Each is settling in and becoming comfortable in their own way. It is a process, they're both very good dogs and I'm glad they are here and in the team. He is more outgoing and likes to be handled more than she does.

A little texture added here, Watercolor07 by DancingShiba. Thanks, Roberta.
