The Denali Highway is one of my favorite roads. It's 135 miles (217 km) long, all but 24 miles is unpaved, rutted, washboardy gravel. The road cuts through the heart of the Alaska Range and is almost entirely above or at treeline. The road is closed in winter and services are few and far between in the summer. It's not a road you want to travel if you're in a hurry. Every few years the state brings out their plan to pave it, which I am totally against, and if they did would totally ruin its character and much of what is good about it.
