Male Gila Woodpecker, Melanerpes uropygialis uropygialis, 9.25 in / 23.5 cm. COMMON in low-elevation deserts with woody plants large enough to provide nest sites, including habitat with saguaro cactus or cottonwoods. Nest hole entrance in a Giant Saguaro. Photographed in April 2008.

Northern Flicker (Red-shafted), Colaptes auratus collaris, 12.5 in. / 31.75 cm. COMMON and widespread in wooded habitats with openings such as forest edges, golf courses and riparian cottonwoods. Eating ants here.

Red-naped Sapsucker, Sphyrapicus nuchalis, 8.5 in. / 21.6 cm. UNCOMMON in aspen groves in mountains, slap in coniferous forests where aspens are intermixed. During migration and winter found in lowland riparian and suburban habitats. Photographed in October 2006.
