Male Gila Woodpecker, Melanerpes uropygialis uropygialis, 9.25 in / 23.5 cm. COMMON in low-elevation deserts with woody plants large enough to provide nest sites, including habitat with saguaro cactus or cottonwoods. Nest hole entrance in a Giant Saguaro. Photographed in April 2008.
