The region of Tunisia has some deserts, including part of the Sahara Desert in the south. In the north and mid the land is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. The Sahara (Arabic: الصحراء الكبرى‎, aṣ-ṣaḥrā´ al-kubra, "The Greatest Desert") is the world's largest non-arctic desert, and technically the world's third largest desert. At over 9,000,000 square kilometres (3,500,000 sq mi), it covers most of Northern Africa, making it almost as large as the United States or the continent of Europe. The desert stretches from the Red Sea, including parts of the Mediterranean coasts, to the outskirts of the Atlantic Ocean.

The region of Tunisia has some deserts, including part of the Sahara Desert in the south. In the north and mid the land is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Tunisia does not get so cold in the winter that it snows, but the temperature still can get below 0 °C (32 °F). In the summer it can get up to 32 °C (89.6 °F). The Sahara (Arabic: الصحراء الكبرى‎, aṣ-ṣaḥrā´ al-kubra, "The Greatest Desert") is the world's largest non-arctic desert, and technically the world's third largest desert. I'm going through some older shots and thought that this man would be great addition to my new Mysterious Man series :-) I still remember that afternoon when I took this shot. There were camel and horses races somewhere in Sahara. The atmosphere of the place was incredible with all man completely covered only their eyes visible competing on those beautiful animals. There is something powerful about human eyes when it is only thing you can see, you can really say the strength of the person by it.

While plenty of tourists head to Tunisia simply for the nice beaches and long-lasting summer weather, there is actually a wealth of history to discover in this north-east African country. Apart from the more famous Roman ruins at Carthage and the incredible amphitheater at El Jem, there is also a great collection of Roman ruins in near the northern town of Dougga.

Dougga is situated in the mountains inland of Tunisia, at about 550 meters above sea level, in an area that was densely populated by the Numidians. The city served as one of the capitals of Massinissa, an Roman ally, and one of the contenders to Carthage. Dougga (also known as Thugga) is just over 100 kilometres west from the capital city of Tunis;

The Dougga site is set into the side of a hill, so as you walk down the hill, you come across more and more ruins. In fact, historians estimate that between ten and twenty thousand people once lived here. The highlights are the Capitol building and the amphitheatre, along with several temples, as large portions of these structures still stand and it's easy to transport yourself back to ancient times. The theatre has actually been restored so that concerts can be held there, holding up to 3500 audience members.
