Al-Zaytuna Mosque, or Ez-Zitouna or Ezzitouna Mosque (Arabic: جامع الزيتونة‎, literally meaning the Mosque of Olive) is a major mosque in Tunis. The mosque is the oldest in the Capital of Tunisia and covers an area of 5,000 square metres (1.2 acres) with nine entrances. It has 160 authentic columns brought originally from the ruins of the old city of Carthage. The mosque is known to host one of the first and greatest universities in the history of Islam

While plenty of tourists head to Tunisia simply for the nice beaches and long-lasting summer weather, there is actually a wealth of history to discover in this north-east African country. Apart from the more famous Roman ruins at Carthage and the incredible amphitheater at El Jem, there is also a great collection of Roman ruins in near the northern town of Dougga.

Dougga is situated in the mountains inland of Tunisia, at about 550 meters above sea level, in an area that was densely populated by the Numidians. The city served as one of the capitals of Massinissa, an Roman ally, and one of the contenders to Carthage. Dougga (also known as Thugga) is just over 100 kilometres west from the capital city of Tunis;

The Dougga site is set into the side of a hill, so as you walk down the hill, you come across more and more ruins. In fact, historians estimate that between ten and twenty thousand people once lived here. The highlights are the Capitol building and the amphitheatre, along with several temples, as large portions of these structures still stand and it's easy to transport yourself back to ancient times. The theatre has actually been restored so that concerts can be held there, holding up to 3500 audience members.
