I know that some want to see more of the bayou background in the scenes, but there are just times when there is little interest in the background or it is very confusing. I would have cropped more for just the bird in this case, but here are the twisted old dead trees mired in the mud and the weeds growing in this particular scene. Not the most picturesque place, but the Tri-colored Heron has no problem using it to his advantage. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou.

Not the happiest bird on the bayou, but it wasn’t really angry either and merely trying to get away from my intrusive presence. This was merely a mid-stride shake move that I caught as it moved away. A Tri-colored Heron does a bit off fishing from an old branch overhanging the waters of Armand Bayou. The bait fish on the bayou are plentiful and that is a welcome sight for the hungry herons in the area. There are a lot of young herons coming to the bayou. This is an adult grabbing up another snack.

This pair of juvenile nestling Tri-colored Herons are not yet able to fly. Their only means of escape was to flounder helplessly around in the branches of this tree near the water’s edge. I always enjoy seeing the youngsters like this with their downy topknots. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou.

You’ve met this youngster before, but he/she was bit farther away than in this encounter. He was a bit puzzled by how close I was and not sure what to do during the encounter. Not sure where his sibling was at as I only saw one of the pair during this encounter. A juvenile Tri-colored Heron tries to figure out whether to flee of stay. Photo captured on Horsepen Bayou. I love the immature feathers clinging to the top of its head.
