Life on the idyllic southern coast of the Big Island. Electricity from wind all night, Sun all day, and a cistern to catch rainwater. Miles and miles of miles and miles. Last lava flow here was 1887, although Mauna Loa is still active, most recently to the NW in 2022. Plants are returning as fast as they can. www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/HCV/mloa-eruptions.html Geotag is approximate.

“We are the Universe, becoming aware of itself” —Carl Sagan.

Our guide used a laser pointer to indicate each of the several planets in view at the time. Several short parallel pale lines might be meteors. Not sure what causes the faint central green haze. Maybe vog—volcanic fog—from Kilauea, now that we have descended from the peak of Mauna Kea just enough to get out of the cold? The men in black, who showed up wearing sunglasses when I wasn’t paying attention, explained that the blue squiggle just below center left was a weather balloon.

Happy Starry Saturday!

For the #FlickrFriday #Small theme.
Seashell and cake of soap doing a Stetson Hat impression, with a tiny remnant of earlier soap—still in service—perched on the brim. A formal study in geometry, shape, and texture, with shadows and reflections.

Happy Flickr Friday!

All the plants are planted. Black basalt at lower left was surely sourced on site while breaking up old lava flows during development. Ocean and Sky in the background are completely natural, except for invisible excess CO2 and microplastic.

Nature recycles, Cultures rise and fall.
In the Land of the Setting Sun, the accursed is innocent until proven guilty, but the victim may not recover.

“Only a moment …
My dreams pass before my eyes…
Curiosity”
Kerry Livgren, Dust in the Wind

“A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, …
What rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem …?”
W. B. Yeats, “The Second Coming”

Straight photo with autoexposure, no crop, although I did have to pull the shadows up quite a bit in post.

Happy Absurd Thursday!
Trouble the comfortable,
Comfort the troubled.
