A departure for me.... this is from across the bay, Barrow-In-Furness. The naval shipyard has been an important industry in Barrow for many years. I think they only build submarines here now but they still refit warships.
I wish I'd had time to investigate further, to see if I could have got a closer view of the ships, but I had other business to attend to on this day. This was the first time I'd been to Barrow since I was a youth. On the opposite side of Morecambe Bay, it is only 10 or 12 miles away, as the crow flies, but is 50 miles away by road.

There is talk of building a bridge to connect the two sides, combined with a tidal energy project which would provide enough electricity to power 400,000 homes. It sounds like a great idea, except it will never happen. Morecambe has been waiting 40 years for a 3 mile stretch of road that would bypass Lancaster. We need that to be built before a bridge across the bay and I'm sure the local green lobby would fight any idea of a tidal power project.
