I attended the 49.5th annual Barona Powwow (9/5/2021) with this year’s theme being, “Back to our roots.” It was an amazing event filled with culture, dance performances and amazing colors!
Originally a Powwow or "celebration" (as it was called in older days), was held in the spring to welcome the new beginnings of life. It was a time for people to get together, sing, dance, renew old friendships and make new ones and a time for young people to meet and court. Some trace the word "Powwow" to the Algonquin language. The Europeans may have adopted that word to mean a council or meeting.
