This manor house began life as a guesthouse for visitors to the Carthusian priory which was established in North Yorkshire in 1398. Monastic life at Mount Grace came to an abrupt end in 1539 when the priory was closed following the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. The priory was sold and the religious buildings were partially dismantled. Much of the site remained in ruins, but the guesthouse was repaired and became a substantial manor house.
