Native to the rainforests and savannahs of Central and South America, these New World parrots, with their exotic colouful plummages, are truely a delight to see as they fly above the canopies.

Regrettably, many are becoming endangered, with a number already having become extinct. Rapid deforestation and above all, exploitation on account of the illegal pet trade, are pushing them ever closer to the edge.

Their enormous powerful beaks enable them to climb and hang from branches, as well as crack open nuts. Highly intelligent and extremely sociable birds, they stick to one partner and have a life span of about 50yrs.

The giant otter (pteronura brasiliensis), is a resident of South America, mainly along the Amazon and Pantanal wetlands, and is the largest of the weasel family with a total length of 1.7m. Although aggressive when defending its territory, it's a peaceful and sociable species, living in closely-knit family groups. Of all the otters, it is the most vocal and has over twenty sounds to communicate with one another.

Its exceptionally dense fur, wing-like tail, and webbed feet, make it ideally suited to an amphibious lifestyle. Generally, giant otters prefer freshwater rivers and streams which are seasonally flooded, where they feed on a variety of fish, particularly characins and catfish, as well as crabs, small snakes and small caiman. Its main predators are leopards and caiman.

Globally wildlife is under series threat like never before, and the giant otter is no exception. Decades of hunting for its velvety pelt, and disturbance and loss of its habit, has placed this mammal on the endangered list, with less than 5,000 pairs in the wild.

Tiger Heliconius is found in the southern part of Central America and in northern tip of South America, where they inhabit the region's rainforests.

It derives the name 'Tiger' from the distinct burnt orange and black stripes on its wings. For this reason and because it has long wings it is more commonly called the tiger-striped long wing butterfly.

It's tiger-like stripes are a warning sign to would-be predators that it's both toxic and non-palatable.

As with all butterflies it feds on specific host plants.
