This is a wood duck (aix sponsa), the male of the species. As you can see, it has an attractive iridescent plumage, making it the most colourful waterfowl in its North American range.
Typically, the female is less colourful, but nevertheless still has the crested head.
It nests in cavities in trees and has sharp claws for perching in them.
After being on the brink, over the past hundred years numbers have rebounded, thanks to conservation efforts.
Have a great weekend!

This wader, also known as the Great Bittern, is a secretive bird which is seldom seen in the open. Instead it prefers to skulk among reed beds in search of food, which as well as fish includes small mammals, fledgling birds, amphibians, crustaceans and insects. Its presence becomes apparent in the spring, when the booming call of the male during the breeding season is heard.
Thank you for your welcome comments and continued support!
