These little creatures, Pine Martens (martes martes), are native to and widespread throughout northern Europe, where they inhabit well-wooded areas. At night and dusk when they are most active, they use their keen sense of sight, smell and hearing to prey on small mammals, birds and insects. They also feed on carrion and fruit.
Through human predation and loss of habitat they have declined considerably, but on the List of Threatened Species are of 'least concern'.
