Who doesn't love watching a butterfly?

I was always fascinated by this insect when I was a child. We used to joke about them. How do you make a butterfly? one child asks another. By throwing butter out the window.
Very corny but it captures the excitement children have for this colorful creature.

My wonderful third grade teacher, a childless cat lady who I will never forget, showed us how to use mussels to create and paint little models of butterflies. I loved observing the mathematical symmetry and patterns while enjoying the art of painting those shells as if they were butterfly wings..

Today I delight in growing plants that will attract the butterflies to my immediate environment and reject the use of poisons to treat my grass and gardens.
