I have re-used the AB Streng graphics from an earlier DAF image to present a second Dutch version of this pre-war cab-over-engine (COE) Chevrolet Cordmaster. American trucks were not uncommon in the Netherlands in the pre-war and immediate post-war years; indeed, the Dutch truck maker Terberg began by re-conditioning American army trucks (26-Apr-24).

Bedford trucks were always popular in the Netherlands, although possibly less so once DAF was able to offer suitable alternatives. This Bedford OL carries a typical British-style refuse collection body with so-called ‘chip pan’ sliding hatches on the body sides. Trucks of this style were also used in other countries until the advent of rear-access compactor bodies. This version carries the plain grey livery and municipal coat of arms of Woerden, a small town to the east of Utrecht. A DAF in the same livery is preserved at the DAF Museum in Eindhoven (26-Apr-24).

Whilst a private company, Van Gend en Loos was effectively the road collection and delivery service of Nederlandse Spoorwegen, with depots close to every major railway station. This fictional image was inspired by the cab-over-engine Ford tractor units used for container haulage (not the current ISO containers but an earlier, smaller type developed by NS for domestic use within the Netherlands). The excessive chrome trim is a consequence of the base image being of a preserved vehicle (26-Apr-24).

The Dutch were very resourceful in the immediate post-war years in reactivating their decimated public transport system. Second-hand buses were acquired from any available source, supplemented by some remarkable rebuilds of former military vehicles. This Haagsche Tramweg Maatschappij (Hague Tramway Company) example is based on converted Chevrolet Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) truck, which survives in a plain grey livery in the care of the Haags Transport Museum in The Hague. I've used a little artistic licence to dress it up in the rather more attractive livery carried by the preserved HTM Chausson, which resides in the same museum. Similar, improvised buses on Austin K2 chassis were described as Bellewagens but I'm unsure whether this term was specific to the Austins (22-Apr-12).

Whilst based on a Maltese original, this fictional Canadian Dodge is representative of the many war-surplus trucks rebuilt as buses across Europe and elsewhere. Haagsche Tramweg Maatschappij (Hague Tramway Company) is the municipal operator in Den Haag. Amongst other interesting types, it operated converted Chevrolet CMP trucks as improvised service buses in the immediate post-war period (29-Oct-12).
