The limpkin is a water bird related to the crane. Is name is thought to come from its gait, in which it appears to limp. It has a haunting cry, usually done at night and is sometimes referred to as the "crying bird.'
Here it is photographed in southern Georgia slightly outside its normal range. It is generally only seen in Florida within the United States.
