The Crane Houses in Cologne are striking and modern buildings at the Rhein river.
Each of the three crane houses is 60 meters high, 70 meters long and has a projection of 33 meters. They are multifunctional, contain both office and residential space and are a landmark of modern architecture.

To anyone who has ever pulled themselves out of darkness.

Almost five years ago, I got a Walt Whitman quote tattooed on my arm that says "I contain multitudes". I couldn't have guessed then just how much I'd need that reminder. Especially in periods of intense grief, your whole identity can become shrouded in darkness.

It's all you seem to think about, to talk about. Your choices and actions follow a familiar pattern that always circle back to trauma. And suddenly, you wonder: Is this who I am now?

Of course, it's not. But sometimes the biggest emotion in the room is all we can see. It becomes so large and opaque we can't find the windows or doors. We're blind to the light filtering in.

Sometimes, the darkness even becomes a comfort.

The intruding dawn shines uncomfortable truths, like how darkness tries to tell us we deserve to live inside it. How darkness gives our grief and guilt meaning.

Slowly, we climb each rung out of the dark.
Slowly, our eyes adjust to the idea that we are more than our hurts.

What do you do to live in the light?
Today, I'm going on a long hike.
Calling my foster son.
Writing, creating.
Focusing on what I have, rather than what I've lost.
