Indian architects Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya D.N. Mirza designed the Saracenic Revival style Mahal Palace Hotel completed in 1903. The original clientele were mainly Europeans, Maharajas and social elites. Many world-renowned personalities from all walks of life have stayed here, including Somerset Maugham, Duke Ellington, Lord Mountbatten and Bill Clinton.

Cakil is an antagonist in the epic Mahabharata version of Java. Burisrawa was a prince from the Bahlika Kingdom, son of Somadata and still had family relations with the Pandava and Kaurava families in the Kuru kingdom. He became an ally of the Kauravas in the Baratayuda war. He died at the hands of Satyaki, an ally of the Pandavas . In Javanese puppets, Burisrawa figures are said to come from the Kingdom of Mandaraka .
