Architect Robert Finkelhor designed the Colonial Revival style house in 1936 for Wilson S. Jones and his wife Constance and their two daughters, Patricia and Francis. Jones (b.1900) was the executive vice president of an insurance company.

Architect Robert Finkelhor (1899-1957) designed the Spanish Colonial Revival style residence for silent screen actor Johnny Hines in 1927. The actor engaged the architectural firm of Lee & Scott to add a bath house and other refinements shortly after the house was completed. Hines was born as John F. Hines in Golden, Colorado on July 25, 1895. He was both actor and director, best remembered for his roles in the films Burn 'Em Up Barnes (1921), Tillie Wakes Up (1917), Conductor 1492 (1924) and The Speed Spook (1924) . He was married to Irma Warner and was the brother of director Charles Hines and actor Samuel E. Hines. He died in Los Angeles on October 24, 1970.

Finkelhor spent the early part of his career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. He moved to Los Angeles in 1924 as head of the architecture department for builder Paul Shitice. Among his achievements are included an estate for MGM Executive Hunt Stromberg (on Mapleton Drive 1932); a home for Harpo Marx in 1938; a Cape Cod style residence for MGM writer Irving Brecher (Bel-Air, 1941); and the Bob Hope Residence in Toluca Lake (1939).

The Johnny Hines Residence is located at 3859 Franklin Avenue in the Franklin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.
