Architect David F. Picken designed the Spanish Colonial Revival style residence for Max van Lewen Swarthout, Dean of the School of Music at the University of Southern California for twenty four years and two terms as President of the California Music Teachers Association. El Rodeo, the University yearbook commented in 1938, "in addition to directing the affairs of the school and teaching piano, Professor Swarthout has conducted a series of radio addresses and public lectures to further spread the fame of the school." Professor Swarthout died on June 7, 1954.

The Swarthout residence is located at 2548 North Catalina Street in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The Spanish Colonial Revival style residence is situated at the crest of a hill and is accessed via a tunnel connecting the garage to the house. The architect designed the house for Sidney J. Perry and his family; Perry was the owner of a diary products company. In later years, the home was owned by business executive Don Belding, Chairman of the Board of Foote, Cone and Belding Advertising Agency. Belding served three terms as director of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and was also active in the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). The house appeared in the Los Angeles Times on June 1, 1928. Locally, the architect also designed the Schlyen House for Russian immigrant and pharmacist Joseph Schlyen and family in 1924. The five bedroom, 4.5 bath house is currently (August 2012) on the market and listed for sale for $2,250,000. (located at 4773 Los Feliz Boulevard) and the Edward McBride Residence in 1923.

The Perry Residence is located at 4115 Dundee Drive in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles.
