The Balboa Highlands is a community of approximately 100 homes built by developer Joseph Eichler between 1962 and 1964. It is one of only three Eichler tract projects in Southern California and the only one in Los Angeles County. The tract features three basic floor plans: a post-and-beam with a flat roof, a low gabled design and a third model with a central gable. The homes feature Douglas fir beams, redwood ceilings, Philippine mahogany paneling, decorative block or brick fireplaces, grooved wood siding and expansive glass walls. The tract consists of 4 main streets: Darla Avenue, Lisette Street, Nanette Street, and Jimeno Avenue, off Balboa Blvd. in Granada Hills. The tract was officially listed as Los Angeles’ 25th historic preservation overlay zone (HPOZ) and the first postwar neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley to achieve such status.
