This is the beautiful view outside the Cabin by the Sea at Lunawanna on South Bruny Island. Looking across Daniels Bay we can see the coastline of the Tasmanian mainland.

600 people live permanently on Bruny Island and during the summer months numbers are swelled despite limited accommodation. This cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable winter stay.

In less than 15 minutes one has made the crossing from Kettering on the Tasmanian mainland to Bruny Island. The whole process requires a minimum of fuss.

Prior to 1983 the Bruny Island ferry landed at Barnes Bay, a longer journey of some 35 minutes. Once the new location at Roberts Point was agreed upon it meant a much shorter time spent on the water and a far more efficient (and profitable ferry service).

If you enlarge this photograph and look closely in the air you'll see a rare example of the island's many wildlife attractions: a Wedge Tailed Eagle in flight. This is Australia's largest bird species with a wing span of well over 2 metres.
