31st October 2023 at the Union Chapel, London N1.

Country: United States. Style: Jazz - Vocals.

Line Up: Kurt Elling (v), Charlie Hunter (g), Julius Rodriguez (keyboards), Marcus Finnie (d) and guests: Alistair White (trombone), Tom Walsh (trumpet), Graeme Blevins (tenor sax).

Kurt Elling is from Chicago and released his first album in 1991. His collaboration with Charlie Hunter began in 2021 with the album "SuperBlue" (although they had crossed paths before). Here they were joined by Julius Rodriguez and Marcus Finnie (who from the regular touring band, although they were not on that album or the 2023 follow up "The Iridescent Spree") and a local horn section. As well as Elling's compositions they performed songs by Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dorough and PJ Morton. This was the first time I have taken photos of Elling, but I had seen him three times before. In 2007 and 2011 at the Barbican and in 2009 at the Pizza Express Jazz Club, all three times with Laurence Hobgood.
