6th October 2018 at Golden Gate Park (Banjo Stage), San Francisco, CA.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (free annual festival), www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/2018/.

Country: United States - Texas. Style: Americana.

Lineup: Joe Ely (v/g), Jimmy Dale Gilmore (v/g), Butch Hancock (v/g/harmonica), Robbie Gjersoe (g), Jimmy Pettit (bass g), Pat Manske (d) and guest: Eamon McLoughlin (fiddle).

This band, originally from Lubbock, TX, was first together between 1972 and 1973. It recorded an album which had a limited release on 8-track tape only. The three key members of the group (Joe Ely, Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock) went on to solo careers which led to the album's re-release in 1980 in the UK and 1990 in the USA (the latter with 13 of the 17 tracks only). From 2002 onwards they have reunited (with new accompanying musicians) for three further albums and occasional tours. The material of these albums is not was strong as their solo recordings (the same could be said of the original album apart from "Dallas" and "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown") and their set here included "Dallas" and a sprinkling of their solo songs ("Hopes Up High", "Wind's Dominion", "Bluebird"). This was the fourth time I have seen the Flatlanders, and over the years I have seen the three of them several times with their own projects. But, apart from Gilmore the previous day at HSB with Dave Alvin (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157677594247338/), I have only photograhed Hancock before (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/tags/butchhancock,-thef...). I saw Eamon McLoughlin three times during HSB - this set, with Rodney Crowell and with Emmylou Harris.
