Bobby McFerrin was born in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He was a piano player before switching to a vocalist in 1977. While getting started playing and singing in piano bars, McFerrin came across Astral Project performing at the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in 1979. He sat in with them regularly for five months before moving on to San Francisco to start his solo career. In recent years he has abandoned songs for improvised sounds, performed a cappella with other singers. For many years he has worked with the 12 strong Voicestra. Here he was joined by four its members (together they are called Gimme 5) .Three of the four have worked with McFerrin since 1986 (and Judi Vinar since 2001). Also on stage was a choir drawn from UK singers.
