Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta

A view of Moraine Lake from the shore, showing reflections of some of the peaks in the surrounding Valley of Ten Peaks. The white streak between Mount Bowlen (left) and Mount Tonsa (right) is a steep, narrow ice filled gully, commonly called a couloir. The Wenkchemna Glacier lurks somewhere behind these peaks and feeds Moraine Lake.

Bow Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta

A heavy mist had covered Bow Lake when I arrived before dawn. Now the mist has largely dissipated and a clear day is dawning, lighting up Crowfoot Mountain in a reddish glow.

Banff National Park, Alberta

A thermal inversion (cool air trapped under a layer of warmer air) covers the mountain valley below us. I continued ahead on the Icefields Parkway, down into the valley and, sure enough, drove into a fog.

Jasper National Park, Alberta

On the slopes of Cinquefoil Mountain a fire of years past has burned the spruce forest. Willow trees, now in their fall colors, have volunteered, the first stage of a sequence that will lead to the forest’s renewal.
