The sea (South Pacific Ocean) was dirty meaning that all the lure casting was being done in the river and gut, but it was a slow day, with only a report of a single salmon (Chinook Salmon) taken on the north bank (far side). A few Kahawai (aka Australian Salmon) were taken right in the river mouth, most being returned to the sea alive.

My niece's friend Mark Wilson was down from Auckland for three days to experience Chinook/Quinnat Salmon fishing on the rivers of the east coast of the South Island. Salmon are a rare straggler to the river mouths of the lower North Island, but definitely don't travel as far north as Auckland!

Friday we, along with my fishing buddy Wayne Morris spent the day on the Waimakariri River, but caught nothing (we did see a couple of salmon caught though). Saturday we started about 30km upriver on the Rakaia River (nothing seen there) before heading to the Rakaia mouth (south side) where we were into Kahawai (Australian Salmon) and I got a 5 kg (11 lb) salmon, my first for many years. Sunday we were back for another go, but Mark lost a salmon that would have been way bigger than mine, but we caught heaps (15+) of kahawai (kept one - released the others).

20150109_4444_1D3-105 Another salmon being caught

The fish can be seen just to the right (in the water) of the third person. The left person is the angler.

Fishing for Chinook Salmon before sunrise. This is a 60-70 minute drive from home and this season was a 15 minute walk from the car park, so to be here this early meant a very early start.
