A very young version of me in 1978 with a trout caught in the lower Waipara River near Amberley, North Canterbury.

This was the first day of our Christmas camping summer holiday and after two trips to take all our camping gear and get tent up and bedding in, I decided to head off down the river (about 150m) for a fish. My Mum said to take a bucket to get a bucket of water, so I headed down to the river, and caught this fish on the third cast, filled the bucket with water and headed back to camp. "I am back" I announced, to which mum said "What did you forget?"

"Nothing, I have a fish already".
"Rubbish - you can't have even got to the river".
I then produced this fish and all hell broke lose between Mum and her friends. "He's got a fish! He's got a fish!"

That was breakfast for about six people the following morning, and by Christmas Eve I was told not to bring any more fish. I had already released 80-90% of those I had caught.

In October 1993 nine year old Timothy caught this Spotted Spanish Mackerel on a picnic trip to Nukulau Island, near Suva, Fiji. This picture was published on the "Take A Kid Fishing" page of the October 1994 issues of New Zealand Fishing News.

I had set the boat/trolling rod up and handed it to Tim to look after while I set up another rod, and Whammo - the lure gets nailed.

Nukulau was the "Ellis Island" of Fiji, where indentured labourers from India were housed before going to the farms and plantations, later becoming a picnic venue for those with access to a boat.

A few years ago it was the prison island for George Speight, following the third coup in Fiji.

On the morning of 23rd January 2005, I headed down to the pier just after 3am to find two Maori guys asleep (guitars and empty beer bottles nearby) and Ahmad, a Kuwaiti guy fishing. A little before 5am his rod bent over with a large fish. Finally we were able to beach it after "walking" the fish the length of the pier back to the sand and this school shark (Galeorhinus galeus) was landed. As I had helped land this fish I ended up with about 30% of the flesh and it was very nice eating!

In the background is my Penn 750SS reel attached to a Kilwell Beach Baron 12' 2-piece surf caster.
