The horse drawn plough was used to break up the ground
by turning over the upper layer of the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface. This took place normally in the early Spring. Seeding or planting in the field would come later after the ploughed field was harrowed. The latter process involved smoothing out the field and breaking up the big bits of clay left by the more rougher process of the plough..
