The Madonna della Fonte, a Byzantine icon, is the protectress of Conversano and the diocese of Conversano-Monopoli.

It is said that Simplicio, Bishop of Conversano, was sent by Pope Felix III to Africa on a mission against the followers of Arianism. There he saved the icon from a fire set to a Christian church and on the way back a storm wind made it absolutely impossible for the boat to enter the harbour of Polignano as planned. Thus the course had to be changed and the boat with the sacred icon landed on the beach of Cozze near Conversano and was taken in a proession to Conversano. The storm which forced the boat to change to course was interpreted as a sign of the Madonna‘s will to become the protectress of Conversano.
