The Abbey San Galgano was a Cistercian Monastery founded in solitary position between the towns of Chiusdino and Monticiano approx. 35 km south-west of Siena. Built in the 13th century, Condottieri despoiled it in the second half of the 14th century, so that by the end of that century only the Abbott remained there.

The abbey remained impoverished and kept decaying for almost four centuries. In 1786, the campanile fell and crashed the roof of the church so that in the following years the ruin was looted for building material. In the 19th and 20th centuries some restoration was done but the church remained a ruin. The long tall nave with its windows and an apse rose window still stand, as well as the chapter house and part of the scriptorium.
