My photo astrophotography opportunity of 2020 saw me venturing to the coastlines of East Cork near Ballycotton down the south of Ireland in search of a recent shipwreck, called the MV Alta.

This ship was apparently abandoned and floating away at sea for a close to 1 year before an Atlantic Storm caused it to crash in February of 2020. I was actually away on vacation with the family up at the west of Ireland in County Mayo when the storm hit Ireland and when this ship has crashed. When I had seen reports on the news and via Social Media that it had crashed only 40 minutes drive from where I live in Cork, I was already starting to make plans to photograph it.

So when clear skies presented themselves during the new moon phase, myself and my friend and fellow Landscape Photographer seized the opportunity to capture this new shipwreck with the Milky Way above it. There was a lot of rain in the week leading up to this shoot, on account of that Atlantic Storm, so the fields and the landscape in general was soaking wet. To get to this location, we had to hike for 20 minutes along the coastline and through some very muddy fields. My black waterproof pants was turned a more brown colour when we had gotten back to our cars at the of that shoot!

What a way to start off 2020. Of course, I had no idea that only a few weeks later in March we would find ourselves even more isolated than this shipwreck amidst the global CoronaVirus (Covid19) pandemic.

This is image is my personal favourite from a recent Astro Shoot down at Ballycotton on the eastern coastline of County Cork in Ireland. Not only is this image my favourite from that shoot but it is definitely quickly becoming one of my personal all time favourite images as well.

Here, you can see the Milkyway arching over the restored MARY STANFORD sea vessel. The RNLB Mary Stanford was the Ballycotton Lifeboat from 1930 to 1959.

This Panoramic image is a "Stacked Pano" containing 1 row of 5 vertical columns consisting of 4 stacked images in each column all stitched together. RAW files were first processed in Adobe Lightroom, then exported and stacked using Starry Landscape Stacker and then finally brought back into Lightroom to stitched together into a single Panorama.

This image was captured in the early hours of a beautiful morning when the sun was rising just behind Ballycotton Island & Lighthouse which is located on the east coast of County Cork down the south of Ireland. The dynamic range was so great on this particular occasion that I was forced to stack a Lee 0.6 Graduated ND filter with a Lee 0.9 Graduated ND filter just to control the highlights in the sky. Used a Lee 0.9 ND Filter to slow down the exposure time and give the water a long exposure effect.

This image was captured as the sun was rising behind Ballycotton Lighthouse which is located across the Ballycotton Harbour on the east coast of County Cork down the south of Ireland.

Taken with a Canon 6D and a Canon 24-105mm using a Lee 0.9 Graduated ND filter to balance the exposure between the sky and the foreground and a Lee 0.9 ND filter to reduce the amount of lighting entering the lens as to slow down the shutter speed. Single RAW file processed within Adobe Lightroom 6
