Day 7 of the Icelandic adventure took us on an epic journey over to the Snaefellsnes peninsular. A trip that turned out to be 2 and a half tanks of fuel, 600km, 3 changes of undercrackers and a trip thru a tunnel so deep it made your ears pop...…

We eventually arrived at the left turn for the church. Bearing in mind I had already driven circa 250km through the worst weather and driving conditions you could imagine. At one point we lost the road completely until a snow plough coming over the horizon saved our lives. I do hasten to add that throughout this whole outward bound journey Mike didn't once stop playing 'Candy Crush' on his phone!

Anyway, back to the turning! It was literally a single track road covered in sheet ice. The sign said 2km to the church WTF! was the exclamation. I know we put the Duster to the test previously but this was it's toughest so far. Piloted by my good self and the Pirate barking out the orders we made it to the parking spot safely.

Waterproofs and Yaktrax on we exited Dusty to driving rain, howling wind and a carpet of ice beneath us. I got to the church, had a scoot around, fired off a few frames and promptly found refuge at the North side of the church out of the torrential weather. Meanwhile Mike disappeared amongst the grave stones trying to be all arty farty…. Although give him his due he made a decent job of it :)

We spent around 60 mins here and having spent another 20 mins trying to work the 4x4 on Dusty we managed it back down the track with no drama. Arriving at the T junction at the end of the track proved a difficult conversation! It's a good job I was driving or I wouldn't be here to tell the tale now!!!! But that's another story ;)

Day One, Region One, Gardur…

We headed north of Keflavik Airport after picking up the Duster.... Testing out its grip along the way!

After only driving a DSG gearbox for the last 5 years it soon fell back into place, even changing gear with the right hand!!!!!

I have decided to post my images from the trip in chronological order...…. Good or bad so please bear with me.....

The Þingvellir Church in the þingvellir National Park, Valhallarvegur, Iceland.

My personal favourite of the numerous churches we repented our sins in on our Icelandic odyssey. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage site. On our first visit we saw 'zip!' The weather was pretty abysmal to say the least. But, our second trip on the way back to Reykjavik for our last night before the flight home was amazing. We could clearly see why it has it's status and why it's the Icelanders playground. So much so the PM of the country has his summer getaway next door!

…. and if I ever had the inclination to get married again it would be here. So beautiful :)

The picturesque church overlooking the town of Vik in Iceland.

This was Day 2 and stop number 1. We were on our way to Black Beach but this really caught our eye. I can't tell you how steep and windy the road was up to here. Covered in snow and ice too. Dusty made it up there tho without a flinch! Just goes to show how ill prepared us Brits are for a dusting of the white stuff!
