This yellow wall with deeply recessed light funnel is located at a place near Ahmadnagar in Maharashtra. It was the home where Meher Baba spent his time. The Baba has a large following of enlightened followers. He took a vow of silence and never uttered a word in public in the last few decades of his life.

He is easy to follow and non obtrusive. There is no hype associated with his teachings or the methodology of his disciples. There is no effort whatsoever to try and garner funds and followers or to enforce a belief system.

The VIBGYOR of the colors stands exemplified here in this house that was built in 1938. Though the VIB has become BIV, most probably because of some not so color aware followers who may have undertaken repairs and replacement.
( Edit April 2013 - I have been told subsequently that this was Baba's very own creation of a flag and this was the color scheme for the flag that he wanted. So all my hypothesis on a wrong VIBGYOR does not hold any water or color )

You can read more about the maverick God being at wiki

Don't Worry Be Happy ! a great hit from the 90s is ascribed to the Meher Baba

Indian Railways is the largest network of rails, engines, tracks and such things in the world and it carries numbers and loads that are mind boggling. Leave the numbers aside, it takes away the romance. The charms and the sense of travel that the iron roosters provide is like nothign that any other mode of travel can give.

Meherabad in Maharashtra. It is an abode of the disciples of Meher Baba now. Very impressive. No tell tale tales of commerce that otherwise rule such places of belief. The nearby town of Shirdi which is where Sai Baba is the ruling presence is a mess of humanity. Chaotic, commercial and absolutely different.

Meherabad is peaceful. no commerce please and has vast open spaces. You and your maker can perhaps have a dialogue or maybe a soliloquy.

In the summer months the place does not receive any guests but rest of the year it is open and you can visit it and maybe rediscover yourself.

This was shot at a railway crossing near Meherabad. The series comprises of split second takes of the railway employee and the passing train. A project long in the making but done at Meherabad. I know not whom to thank. Meher baba, perhaps.

I have three flickr friends who are train spotters and lovers of the railways. This is also for them

This is a railway crossing on the way to Meherabad in Maharashtra.

A thin straight line of the railway track runs through the vast open landscape. The narrow road runs alongside. It is a place which has a distinct character. It is the topography of the land or how the road loops to the crossing, it is hard to say. Or perhaps it has to do with the whole ambience of the nearby ashrama of Meher Baba which lends it an air of silent expectation.

There is no shuffling madness here that Ian Anderson wrote about nor are there any losers running headlong to their death but there is a Locomotive Breath..ing down alright. Organized religion has its pace and time and I hope it is on the decline.

LIsten to Jethro Tull singing that song

In the shuffling madness of the locomotive breath
runs the alltime loser headlong to his death.
Oh
he feels the piston scraping
steam breaking on his brow.
Old Charlie stole the handle
and the train

it won't stop going no way to slow down. Oh
Oh.

He sees his children jumping off at stations one by one.
His woman and his best friend in bed and having fun.
Oh
he's crawling down the corridor on his hands and his knees.
Old Charlie stole the handle
and the train

it won't stop going no way to slow down. Oh
Oh.

He hears the silence howling
catches angels as they fall

And the alltime winner has got him by the balls.
Oh
he picks up Gidean's Bible; open at page one.
I thank God he stole the handle
and the train

it won't stop going no way to slow down.
No way to slow down.
No way to slow down.
No way to slow down.

Down in Meherabad a passenger train was coming and I recorded its journey as the twin engined train thundered onto the level crossing.

The person manning the crossing dressed in a strange orange shirt which I have never seen a Railways employee wear before. He perched himself atop a raised slab of concrete and in a brief moment when time stood still, the train passed by.

This is not the last of the shots but the engine will not be visible once this is done. A few more to wind up the series..If you are not terminally bored and yawning already !!!

The railway crossing at Meherabad in Maharashtra.

The orange shirted gate man seems to be satisfied with his ministrations with the flags to see off the efficient departure of the blue train bound for Pune. No passengers are to be seem waving or looking out as one is so habitual of seeing that genre in countless photos of people traveling in India.

Indian Railways is an adventure in itself. Clean and efficient in patches and downright disgusting if you start seeing too much around.

Lots of nostalgia gets woven with the railways. The sense of journey, of going out and seeing the world.
Lots of geographical landscapes too as you see the ever changing terrain of the Indian plains. The long pipe lines of water lying on the sides littered with white washed blurbs of " Mil hi to len.. Rishtey hi rishtey" matrimonial advertorials which may have vanished now as the online matrimony sites seem to be the new way of organising marriages in India.
