There is always something about silhouettes of palm trees leaning over on the edge of the ocean that make it a perfect photographing subject for me in Hawaii. I was looking for an area that have that look near a body of water that reflect on the sunset light and the silhouettes of palm trees. This hidden spot at the end of Kawaikui park in Hawaii Kai is just perfect for a composition that I was after. Took me about a dozen tries within this year to get the condition looking like this but keep trying and coming back to get the "shot" is what landscape photography is all about.

On the last night of a 17 day Southwest trip my wife and I found a remote campground next to a reservoir in Nevada. Planning to get one more Milky Way shot I got up at 3:30 AM (27 degrees) and patiently waited for the clouds to clear. They didn’t so I broke down the camera and when I turned around to head back to our van I was greeted by this tranquil sunrise scene—knowing that the interior light on meant a hot cup of coffee was waiting.

A fairy slipper orchid (aka lady slipper orchid, scientific name Calypso bulbosa) glows in the mottled light in a relatively lush subalpine forest. Note the white dots on the petals, which are lodgepole pine pollen grains.

Fairy slipper orchids are widespread throughout the Northern hemisphere, occurring in cool shady environments. They produce a single leaf in the fall that overwinters under snow, ready to photosynthesize in the early spring following snowmelt. The flowers emerge early in the summer and last only a few days before wilting. Fairy slipper orchids lure pollinators by producing a scent that mimics neighboring nectar producing flowers, although the flowers lack nectar.

The species is named for Calypso, a Greek nymph who lured Odysseus to her Island so he could be her husband.

This is one of my favorite scenes close to home, especially in the spring when morning fog and early light combine.
