As our springs warm up a common sight is turtles emerging to bask in the sun. This species easily turns communal when the sun warms enough for them to start enjoying the heat on their shells.
The females have strong jaws enabling them to dine on mollusks, clams, crayfish and other invertebrates plus some fish while the males and juveniles feed primarily on insects and crayfish.
Our 5 or 6 months of winter finds this member of the turtle family on the soft bottom of its habitat hiding under tree trunks, boulders and ledges.
